David is an acoustic musician who does not shy away from technology. His willingness to embrace the advantages of technology paired with his decision to be an acoustic musician make David a unique live performer who is fascinating to watch. He is a master of the loop peddle and also takes full advantage of a vocal harmoniser. These two pieces of equipment give David a rich and full sound making his live shows sound like an expertly produced studio album. But like a good chef David knows that too much of one ingredient can spoil the dish, he has a good sense of when to push the technology to one side, proving that he's an exceptional musician and does not have to rely on musical gadgetry. David's guitar playing is very precise, every note is intended and struck with effortless accuracy. David's vocal style is soft, smooth and like his guitar playing it too appears to be effortless yet he sings each note with perfection. To see David perform live is like taking the back off a fine watch to see the inner workings perfectly moving together and admire the exceptional craftsmanship.




I'm working on a new EP at the moment. What I want to do is create a recording that sounds like I do when I play live. My previous EP is heavily produced but it's not something I can hand to a venue and say "This is what you're going to get". Also all the songs that were on my first EP have evolved now and the way I play them live is totally different to how I originally conceived them.




My influences have been Iron Maiden, JudasPriest and Black Sabbath, also Suzanne Vega, Fleetwood Mac and Supertramp. They are at different ends of the spectrum but in my mind there is one connection, they all have a very good sense of melody. I try to do the same with my song writing, I want to write something that people will remember.




My songs are always changing and evolving, one example is my song titled 'One Man Show' there is an intro on there which I only added last year. I write down what's going on in my life or what I see going on in other peoples lives. I am also aware that I want to connect with an audience, so if you're singing about yourself to much people are going to switch off but if you simply change the 'me' to 'you' people will make a greater connection with the song. Also if I want to write about my personal life I might write the song from the perspective of someone who's witnessing this rather writing from my perspective.




Music to me is a very emotional thing and it's a very raw thing. I'm very conscious that I want to get the lyrics across, I don't sing as much as I try to tell a story. One of my hero's who is very good at that is Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, half of the stuff on his albums are semi spoken because he is trying to get his emotion across.




It's entirely up to the musician, they know the score. With Open Mic nights it's a great opportunity to try out new songs or try and play with other musicians in an environment where there is a PA and an audience. Lot of venues do things where they might offer you a free drink or a discount. So if you choose to play at an Open Mic then that’s up to you. But when venues start to book acts that they have seen play at an Open Mic and then not pay because they haven't paid in the past at Open Mics that when I start to think there is a problem. It does happen especially in London were you get the 'Pay to Play'  which is were you either have to pay money to get in or bring a certain amount of people to the gig before you get the opportunity to play.
